"This edition of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles places the text within the political, social and historical conditions which were instrumental in creating the detective novel as a genre. The aim is to provide the reader with a discussion of the literary predecessors of the detective form in British literature - the broadside ballads, the newgate novels, and the sensation novels. The introduction, divided into various sections, provides a pre-history both of crime and its literary representation. It documents the cultural shift instrumental in bringing the detective form to fore and to highlight the emergence of motives seminal to the detective as already available in existing mainstream novels.
