Partition Literature an Anthology

"This edition, an anthology of poems, short stories and critical essays, is chiefly designed for the undergraduate student who chooses to study optional paper on India's Partition of 1947. The volume brings together the prescribed readings as well as the background texts that constitute the paper. Critical essays from scholars, like Muhammad Umer Memon, Sukeshi Kamra, Arjun Mahey, Debjani Sengupta and Jashodhara Bagchi, provide valuable insights about the historical contexts of the Partition as well as the literature around the event. The poems, by Jibanananda Das, Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Gulzar are accompanied by brief introductions to each poet and a select bibliography prod the interested reader and the student to explore the issues further. The volume incorporates material that are of interest to both lay readers as well as to students not only because they are topical and offer fresh assessments on the Partition but also because they enable them to contemplate the long shadows of 1947 on our contemporary realities. The 1947 Partition was, and still remains, one of the most traumatic moments of our shared history in the subcontinent.
